PSY 230 students (Fall 2009-2010)

According to Drexel University, this course “[i]ntroduces basic principles of the science of learning [and] [e]mphasizes I. P. Pavlov’s classical conditioning, B. F. Skinner’s operant conditioning, and applications to counseling and therapy.” (Undergraduate course descriptions). This description, of course, represents only a portion of the topics covered in an introductory Learning course. For example, is learning different than memory? What is the neurobiological basis of learning and memory? Does emotion ‘get in the way’ of learning or facilitate it? Is language ‘learned’ or ‘acquired’? What exactly is cognitive psychology and cognitive science in relation to a Learning course? Is a rat a good model of human behavior?
Before we start the term, please introduce yourself and what interests you about this course.
Hey guys! I am Christy Lane, your TA for Psychology of Learning. I am a first year student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program here at Drexel. I study forensic psychology and am interested in treatment development for youth in the juvenile justice system. Specifically related to this course, I am very interested in how the theories that we will learn about here can be applied in the real world. I also want to stress that I am here to help out in any way that I can. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me about any questions that you may have. I look forward to working with you this term!

Hidey ho, neighborinos!
My name is Spenser Brossman, and I’m a senior this year. I’m a dual major in math and psychology, although math is my first/’main’ major, for what it’s worth. I’m hoping to actually graduate with both this year, which would just be super.
My main interest (and honestly, the reason I got into psychology/added it as a major) is ‘abnormal’ psychology, i.e., anything that is out of the ordinary. This may include diseases of the mind (e.g., varied perceptions of time or space) or simply reviewing the cases of individuals who many would consider to be ‘off their rocker’.
Going along with that, I’m definitely on the cognitive side of the psychology spectrum. Although I respect the opinions (usually), I find behaviorism to be a simply outdated form of logic. Now, that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to learn their opinions… nothing could be farther from the truth.
See, unlike current politics (which is, for what it’s worth, terrible), I believe that we as psychologists can learn much from the ideas we don’t necessarily agree with. This country was founded on compromise, so I feel as if most ‘truths’ are found somewhere in-between opposing opinions.
Due to this, I would most assuredly want to learn from a non-cognitive perspective in this course, simply so I can see both sides, and truly understand what we think of learning. It’s very easy to form opinions based on one set of data, but it can become tricky based on two sets of quality data. That will surely be the most interesting part of this course.

Hi! My name is ShawnMarie Reilly and I am a pre-junior Psychology major. My interests lie in abnormal psychology. I feel the material learned in this class will be helpful in understanding why different treatments used to treat patients are or are not successful.
I am also taking a physiological psychology class this semester and I am interested in seeing how these two classes correspond. By looking at the course descriptions, it seems as though some material may cross. I think that will be very helpful!

Hi,
I’m Chelsea Biemiller, and I am currently a junior Psychology major/Philosophy minor. I hope to go to law school, and believe that the study of Psychology, while untraditional, is an excellent path to that goal. My main interests are in the study of knowledge (perfect for this course!), ethics, and theories of justice. In this class, I am especially interested in further exploring how emotion can affect memory, and the phenomenon of “repressed memories.”

Hi! I’m Madalyn Dolan. I’m a senior Psychology major. I have a pretty wide range of interests in the psychology field, but I really enjoy neuropsychology and forensic psych. I think this class will be interesting because Dr. Ramey is awesome… but also because i think the learning vs. memory debate throughout this class will be very interesting. I like to learn about the varying view points of psychology.

Hello everyone,
My name is Adia Clark and this is my Junior year here at Drexel. I was an Entertainment Management aka (dead-end) major up until mid-last year, so I am fairly new to the Psychology program. With that being said, I feel like my fortitude of student loans is better substantiated with all the interesting topics found within the Pyschology realm and frankly, at last I feel somewhat fulfilled. Bear with me. After being thrown into this lovely major, no particular subject has overtly peaked my interest. Hopefully this class will give me some insight about myself and future, as well as people in general.

Hi everyone!
I’m Ana Prelic, and currently a sophomore Psychology major. My interests lie in clinical psychology and I hope to be able to work with patients who have trouble dealing with their own diseases. Abnormal psychology is a field which I find intriguing simply because of the nature of the diseases which plague our world today, and my interests fall in this field as well. My intentions are to obtain a Ph. D. and to have a practice of my own. This course, I feel, will allow me to gain a better understanding of learning and how it affects memory, and how different types of conditioning produce different, or in some cases, same outcomes.

Hello! I’m sorry I’m late but Drexel had me removed from all internet services because of a virus on my computer, and didn’t tell me. But, anyways, I’m a Psychology major and a Criminal Justice minor. I hope to maybe become a Forensic Psychologist. I took this class because it is a requirement but I am also interested in the processes in which we take in information and retain it. So I know this class will be very interesting.
